The "hotspots" meant to welcome migrants when they first arrive are overcrowded and in bad shape, and despite the theoretical maximum stay of 72 hours, many stay for longer than two months. The situation has resulted in some municipalities with hotspots needing to care for over 1,000 children. Their situation is the most worrying, left practically to themselves and potentially at risk and vulnerable to falling into the hands of smugglers.
