The Council of Europe told Hungary on Thursday to halt implementation of its new amendment to national education law that would force Central European University to close. The resolution comes as a different law targeting NGOs is under consideration by Hungary's Parliament, legislation the Council said should be assessed along with the education bill by legal experts on its advisory Venice Commission. The two laws are widely seen as an attack against George Soros, whose support for free and open societies does not mesh with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's vision of an "illiberal democracy."
