According to the Dutch Military Veterans Foundation (DMV) and psychologist René Diekstra, registering suicides among Dutch veterans is a dire necessity. ''Society sends people off to war situations, but doesn't want to know the price they pay for it,'' concludes Mr. Diekstra. ''It happens too often that veterans commit suicide,'' comments Leo Hartog of DMV. ''By recording the suicides it may be possible to provide targeted help to others. Currently we have no idea where the problems lie.'' The Dutch Ministry of Defense has no indication that veterans commit suicide more often.
