The Bulgarian city Pazardjik is the first to ban the wearing of Muslim face-covering garments in all public spaces. Тhe newly adopted regulation calls for a fine of 300 leva (150 euros) for a first violation and 1,000 leva (500 euros) for each subsequent violation. The proposal for the ban was initiated by the far-right nationalist party VMRO, which is part of the ruling coalition in Bulgaria. Bans on burqas and other similar coverings have already been proposed or voted on in four regional cities in Bulgaria.
