Each year some Dutch students at the European Schools in Brussels paint their faces black and throw on a dark, curly wig. For them, it's a normal Christmas tradition to masquerade as Saint Nicholas's dark-skinned helper Zwarte Piet ('Black Pete'). But other students at these EU-funded schools are offended by the practice and feel that it exemplifies the EU's hesitation to tackle ongoing issues of racial diversity.
