Police in the German capital Berlin regularly misuse their internal information database, POLIKS. Reports by the daily Morgenpost reveal a case when a police officer used the database to spy on her neighbours for years. Though the case wasn’t unique, the head of the Berlin Police press office acknowledged to the paper that they are aware of similar cases, however, there are no statistics available on database misuse. Such misuse is possible since the German authorities do not have a systematic logging of database queries to prevent such abuses.
