The president of the Flemish nationalist party New Flemish Alliance, Bart De Wever, said in an interview that he wanted the establishment of a special status for refugees. According to him, recognized refugees in Belgium should not have immediate access to all social rights. Currently, the European Union bans member states from designating recognized refugees with a special status. Such a populist proposal conveys the image of refugees as profiteers and threatens to transform them into second-class citizens.
