The European Commission published on April 11 its annual "Justice Scoreboard" and Italy is not doing well, lagging behind other European countries on key issues such as reasonable length of trials and independence of prosecutors. In fact, despite some improvement, civil, criminal and administrative proceedings are still way too long: in 2014, the average wait for a first-instance judgment to be delivered was 500 days. Furthermore, most Italian citizens have a bad opinion of prosecutors, with the majority thinking that they are not independent.
