Austria has announced that it will send 70 troops – but no armored vehicles – to the Brenner Pass today, August 17, to stop migrants from entering the country. The government believes between 700 and 1,000 migrants enter the country from Italy each month. The European Commission has given the green light to Austria and several other countries to impose temporary border checks despite being part of Schengen. The Austrian government in early July threatened to send both troops and armored vehicles to the pass, but backed off those plans after further discussions with the Italian government.
