The municipality of Amsterdam wants the government to call out Russia because of the Chechen camps where gay men are being held. City officials also want Dutch State Secretary Klaas Dijkhoff to change the asylum policy for Chechen LGBT men. This was stated by councillor Eric van der Burg April 19 at a protest at a gay monument. Human rights organizations have called the situation in Chechnya an emergency, as gay men continue to be locked up in camps. According to independent Russian media sources, they are tortured and abused in the camps.
