As part of
measures aimed at combatting terrorism, the Belgian government has created a provision
to control the sales of products that could be used to manufacture explosives.
Merchants are now forced to report suspicious purchases to the Federal Police. In addition to contesting the unclear criteria of such a provision and doubting its
efficiency, the Belgian League of Human Rights reiterates its objection to any type of measure that
encourages people to denounce others and creates a resulting atmosphere of mistrust. Citizens should not work as informers for the police.
